Moldova must do more to encourage competitive energy markets

LONDON (ICIS)–Energocom’s rise to prominence in the last two years has been significant.

The Moldovan state wholesaler was tasked by the government to secure electricity and natural gas amid growing concerns that the historic supplier Gazprom would cut deliveries amid growing political tensions.

Over the last two years the company faced not only the formidable task of securing money to buy gas when prices were volatile and at record levels but also to gain sufficient know-how to compete for supplies against highly experienced companies.

The fact that it managed to secure significant quantities of gas to shield Moldova from gas curtailments speaks for its ability to learn fast in a difficult environment.
