LONDON (ICIS)–The ICIS Northwest Europe ammonia-to-hydrogen price increased marginally on a weekly basis heading towards December, with a similar move reported on low-carbon hydrogen while baseload electrolysis saw a solid increase.
The ammonia-to-hydrogen price increased by €0.04/kg on a weekly basis to €6.15/kg on 23 November, continuing the recent trend over the past seven weeks of hovering just above the €6.00/kg mark.
The ammonia-to-hydrogen price reflects the cost of importing fossil-based ammonia to northwest Europe and then decomposing that ammonia into hydrogen. The ammonia price referenced is the ICIS CFR Northwest Europe Duty Unpaid assessment, published every working Thursday.
Low-carbon hydrogen produced via steam methane reforming (SMR) with carbon capture and storage (CCS) attached using month-ahead Dutch gas saw a similar price movement, up €0.05/kg week on week to stand at €3.90/kg, maintaining its discount to ammonia-to-hydrogen above €2.00/kg.
Baseload electrolysis using Dutch front-month power prices, however, saw a 6% rise in value in late November to stand at €6.92/kg, over €3.00/kg higher than the low-carbon equivalent.
